The American Institute of Architects Central States Region recognizes Dake Wells Architecture with a Merit Award for Interior Architecture.
Springfield, MO – Innovative open office and studio space for Dake Wells Architecture located in downtown Springfield wins a regional architecture design award.
Andrew Wells, AIA, and Brandon Dake, AIA, of Dake Wells Architecture traveled to Wichita, Kansas to accept a Merit Award for Interior Architecture for the design of their downtown studio space. The project was selected from a field of entries from a five state region including Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa. The renowned jury included Rob Paulus, AIA, of Rob Paulus Architecture in Tuscon, Arizona; John Birkinbile, AIA, of Line and Space LLC in Tuscon, Arizona; Phil Weddle of Weddle Gilmore Black Rock Studio in Scottsdale, Arizona; and Martin Despang of Rob Paulus Architecture in Tuscon, Arizona.
Dake Wells Architecture highlights their architecture and design services in the design of their office and studio space in the downtown district of Springfield. “Dualities define this renovation of a downtown loft for use by our progressive architectural practice. Enclosed and open. Dark and light. Raw and refined. Box and line,” explained Andrew Wells, AIA, LEED AP, Dake Wells Architecture’s Design Director.
With limited means, a partially enclosed box is positioned between existing columns and elevated above the existing floor. It’s orientation greets visitors to the studio while blocking views of the workspaces. Frankenstein, a symbol of creativity for the firm, guards the entry gallery. A steel reception desk terminates the gallery and marks the endpoint of a single line formed by the workstations along the eastern perimeter of the loft. A patch of green below and white cloud above reinforce the diagram. Salvaged fluorescent lights are reorganized above the workstations and suspended with polycarbonate sheet to form a single lighting element.
At $10 per square foot, the renovation assembles a collection of parts into a new cohesive whole that gives new life to a forgotten space. “This is definitely a case where a lot of restraint with the least of means create the best possible outcome” explained the AIA Central States Jury.
