Springfield artist John Payne will teach an Automatic Drawing and Painting Workshop on Tuesday, July 17, 2012 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at The Creamery Arts Center presented by the Springfield Regional Arts Council (SRAC). The cost is $20 per person.
This workshop is perfect for established artists and for those looking to discover their hidden talents. Payne will begin with a short introduction and then will lead an exercise in drawing followed by one in black and white paint. Automatic drawing and painting is the spontaneous application of line and shape with basic tools. This “no rules” approach to creativity frees the artist and creates work that communicates the artist’s internal experiences.
“The effort to control abstraction with a sense of ‘boundaries’ is reminiscent of the efforts we all make to live passionately while still attempting to conform to moral and social responsibilities,” states Payne. He is motivated by the works of mid-century expressionists and current abstract artists. While some of his work is pure expressionism, many of his pieces are more ordered in their chaos. Payne has shown in many local galleries and venues including Figment, Fresh, Randy Bacon Studios, University Plaza, and The Creamery Arts Center.
