It’s official! First Friday Art Walk has tallied the votes and is proud to announce the winner of the People’s Choice Award in the Art Walk 11th Anniversary Art Contest & Exhibit, as voted on by visitors to the Oct. 5 Art Walk. The winner is Gillian Moore, who receives the honor for her acrylic painting, Tree Girl. First Friday Art Walk and Springfield Regional Arts Council are delighted to honor Moore’s work with the People’s Choice ribbon and $100 cash prize.
Congratulations are in order for all of our winning artists, but especially Melissa J. Szymanski, two-time Grand Prize/First Place winner! Working in colored pencil and mixed media, Szymanski’s incredibly detailed work has wowed our judges for two years running. She continues to set the bar high for this competition. Szymanski’s 2012 winning entry, The Dog Show, takes the first-place ribbon and $250 cash prize.
Painter Paula Farris Reed took second-place honors with her vivid watercolor Rhapsody, a stunning piece that captures the beauty of nature in the form of a single sunflower, painted in sunny jewel tones. Reed’s achievement wins her a second-place ribbon and cash award of $100.
Three-dimensional art was taken to a new level in this year’s competition by sculptor Mike Maloney, who took third-place honors for his gorgeous, nature-inspired bronze, September’s Song, celebrating the grace of antlered might in motion. Mike receives the third-place ribbon and cash award of $50.
Art Walk judges also tapped four entries for Honorable Mention: Dancing Crow, an oil painting by Thia Schuler; Love Bugs, a photograph by Brandon Alms; Snowy Morning, an iPhone image on aluminum by Elise Ellis; and Water Lilies, a series in ceramic by Mari Moore.
Artists whose works are featured in the show are: Avian Dougan, Gillian Moore, Melissa Szymanski, Lecia Joy, Paula St. James, Brandon Alms, Jahnair Johnson, Mari Moore, Paula Farris Reed, Mike Maloney, Dale Augustson, Kameron Downing, Ivan Garcia, Thia Schuler, Frank Schmidt and Elise Ellis. Works are on view until Oct. 26.
Thank you to all the artists who entered the Art Walk Anniversary Art Contest! This annual event, established in 2011 on the occasion of Art Walk’s 10th Anniversary, will be held again in September and October of 2013.
