The PTA of the Mwaya Secondary School in the Kyela region of Tanzania harvested Askinosie’s newest product. Likewise, the PTA of the Malagos Elementary School in Davao, Philippines produced Askinosie Chocolate’s Tableya, a traditional Filipino hot chocolate. Both products are shipped on the same container as Askinosie Chocolate’s cocoa beans.
One hundred percent of the sales of both products will fund meals for the students at the respective schools, where without this program, many would suffer from malnourishment. Askinosie Chocolate purchases the rice for $1.50 and sells it for $16.50 and purchases the Tableya for $1 and sells it for $10. Each PTA uses the profit from their product to fund their school’s lunch program.
Each bag of rice purchased will provide enough money for 220 locally sourced meals; each package of Tableya will provide the funds for 70 locally sourced meals. This will ensure lunch every day for each student for one school year. That’s a total of 360,000 meals for students at both schools. By March 2013, this program will be feeding nearly 2,000 children every school day.
Askinosie Chocolate University’s School Lunch Programs are both 100 percent sustainable and operate using no donations. This model is revolutionary –albeit in a very small way—and it is made possible because of direct relationships with the cocoa farmers in Tanzania and the Philippines.
Askinosie Chocolate’s partner, Convoy of Hope, an international non-profit based in Springfield, Mo., with children’s feeding initiatives around the globe, will continue to assist with oversight on these projects. They offer support in the implementation and monitoring of these programs.
“My favorite part of Askinosie Chocolate’s sustainable model is that it’s bringing the people that we ultimately want to serve to the table and letting them have a voice in their children’s health and educational wellbeing,” Kevin Rose, director of Children’s Feeding Initiatives at Convoy of Hope. “The parents become the ultimate stake holders.”
Since beginning the school lunch program at Malagos, the teachers have cited a significant improvement with 90 percent of the entire student body showing an increase in weight, 86 percent an increase in arm circumference, and 84 percent an increase in height.
