The Business Leadership Award is one of three individual Leadership Awards given by the NASFT to recognize those making a significant impact in the food industry; the other two categories are Vision and Citizenship. Askinosie was nominated by his peers and chosen by a panel of judges comprised of industry leaders and members of the NASFT. These awards recognize specialty food pioneers who have, “advanced food standards in society… through visionary social, economic and environmental efforts,” according to the NASFT.
“The specialty food industry is driven by passionate entrepreneurs who are seeking to make a positive impact on society, whether in their own community, or beyond. The individuals selected for our first annual Leadership Awards each demonstrate extraordinary efforts that go far beyond creating great food,” says NASFT President Ann Daw.
Askinosie will accept the award during a ceremony at the Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco on Jan. 22, 2013. The NASFT is a 60-year-old trade association for food artisans and entrepreneurs with more than 3,000 members worldwide. Askinosie Chocolate is a small batch chocolate manufacturer located in Springfield, Mo., sourcing 100% of their beans directly from the farmers. Shawn Askinosie, founder and chocolate maker, travels to regions of Ecuador, Honduras, the Philippines and Tanzania to work directly with the farmers and source cocoa beans for his chocolate. This allows the chocolate to be traced to the source and labeled Authentic Single Origin Chocolate. It also enables Askinosie Chocolate to profit share with the farmers, giving them a Stake In the Outcome™. The Askinosie Chocolate mission is to serve their farmers, their neighborhood, their customers and each other; sharing the Askinosie Chocolate Experience by leaving the world a better place than they found it.
