Springfield Contemporary Theatre will return to downtown in 2014 in a new interim performance venue, SCT’s Center Stage, located at 431 S. Jefferson, Suite 136 (on the corner of Pershing St & Robberson Ave). SCT is continuing to work with downtown developers on a permanent home. Until a new permanent venue is complete, SCT will reside just one block south of their former home (the Vandivort Center Theatre) in the Wilhoit Plaza located on street level with free patron parking available in the lot behind the plaza on Elm Street.
SCT will open Center Stage with a new production of the 1978 Tony Award winning musical, Ain’t Misbehavin’ helmed by SCT Artistic Director Rick Dines. This production is set to open February 14 for a three weekend run. SCT is currently at work on a complete schedule of performances for 2014 which will be announced soon.
Formerly housed at the historic Vandivort Center Theatre, SCT vacated that location in January 2013 to make way for the transformation of the Vandivort Center into a boutique hotel. SCT has continued during the past year to present quality theatrical works in such varied locations as Canvas Art Gallery, Springfield Art Museum, Nonna’s Italian Café South and Classic Rock Coffee Company.
In February, the joint is jumpin’ as Springfield Contemporary Theatre takes misbehavin’ to a whole new level with the music of Fats Waller. The inimitable Fats Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club, honky tonk dives along Lennox Avenue, rent parties, stride piano players and that jumpin’ new beat, Swing. The outrageous prodigious comic and musical soul of 1920’s and 30’s Harlem lives on in this rollicking, swinging, finger-snappy piece of musical showmanship. Besides the title song, Ain’t Misbehavin’ features such hit songs as “The Joint is Jumpin’,” “Honeysuckle Rose,” “I’m Gonna Sit Write Down and Write Myself a Letter,” “Black and Blue,” “Your Feet’s Too Big” and many more. “Ain’t Misbehavin’…is like an intoxicating combination of a dry martini and a dirty joke, savored over the sassiest Depression-era jazz.” -LA Times.
Ain’t Misbehavin’ will feature Camille Clossum, Johnnie Angelia King, Avilla Martin, Sabrina Trabueand Tony Wheeler. The production is music directed by Alex Huff and choreographed by Darryl Clark. Ain’t Misbehavin’ features the music of Thomas ‘Fats’ Waller. The show was conceived by Murray Horowitz and Richard Maltby, Jr. with musical adaptations, orchestrations and arrangements by Luther Henderson.
Ain’t Misbehavin’ will play February 14-15, 20-21, 28-March 1, 2014 at 7:30 PM as well as February 16, 23 & March 2 at 2:00 PM. Reserved seat tickets are now on sale and available for all performances. Tickets are priced $25 for Adults and $22 for Seniors (55 and over) & Students. Opening Weekend tickets will be discounted to $20. Group rates are available. Student rush tickets (if seats are available) are sold 30 minutes before each performance for $10 cash or $12 charge. Reservations can be made in person at the Springfield Contemporary Theatre Box Office or by calling 417-831-8001.
