In addition to the scholarship awards and school stipends given at the national competition, the national champion will receive a $20,000 college scholarship award.
After the successful pilot programs in Washington, D.C. and Chicago, Poetry Out Loud was launched in high schools nationwide in the spring of 2006 with tens of thousands of students participating. It has grown every year with over 365,000 students competing in 2011-2012.
Financial support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
