Public Works has authorized Hunter Chase & Associates to begin construction on phase II of the Jefferson Avenue streetscape project. This project will continue the streetscape improvements previously constructed downtown, including the construction of ADA-compliant sidewalks, lighting enhancements and signal reconstruction on Jefferson Avenue from Park Central East to Water Street and on Olive Street from Robberson Avenue to Jefferson Avenue.
The estimated construction cost for the project is $1.16 million, with $253,836 being reimbursed by City Utilities, bringing the City’s portion to $905,101. The funding source for the project is the 1/4-cent Capital Improvements Sales Tax.
The project will involve lane shifts and possible closures at various times. During the construction, the traffic signal at Jefferson Avenue and Olive Street will be removed and a stop sign placed on Olive Street.
Olive Street east of Jefferson Avenue will be designated as a storage and staging area for the construction, so the connection from Jefferson Avenue to St. Louis Street will be closed to traffic. Drivers are asked to use caution when driving through the construction project, and use alternate roadways when possible.
The project is scheduled to be complete by January 2016.
