Acoustic guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke will perform at the Gillioz Theatre on Saturday, April 7th at 8:00 PM. Tickets go on sale February 17th at 10:00 AM and start at $35.00.
Kottke, an innovative acoustic guitar virtuoso, absorbed a variety of musical influences as a child. He first learned to play the trombone and violin, before switching to the 6 and 12-string guitars, where he has become known for his mostly instrumental, and unique finger-picking style.
Kottke avoids claiming any one style of music when it comes to his guitar-playing, saying there’s “no description except to say it’s very rhythmic,” and that he writes all of it.
Kottke produced two duet albums, “Clone” and “Sixty Six Steps” with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, and said they have ideas for another one. He’s also thinking about a new solo album. “I’m always working. It’s fun for me to write,” Kottke said. “When you get enough you go into the studio. “As long as I’m writing I’m happy”
“I play guitar like a little piano – the way classical is played,” Kottke said. But “I’m using a blues route and rhythm.” Although he’s produced more than 25 albums, he prefers performing to recording – spending about 80 percent of his time on the road touring the United States and Australia.
“If you’re allowed to play, you’ve got to play,” Kottke said. “It’s more fun for me than it’s ever been. I thought it would wear me out but it does the opposite. It’s like air, water.” Primarily a soloist,Kottke jokes that it’s “regrettable” that he sings, but that people want him to so he does – a little. He talks to the audience in between songs, saying it helps him to know what to play next.
