Fresh Gallery has two featured artists during the month of August. Abstract painter Rebecca Lewis Smith and glass artist Cheryl Vowels .
Rebecca’s experience as an artist began with a love for abstract expressionist painting, followed by an early career creating contemporary stained-glass window designs. She is well versed in oil and acrylic painting, charcoal, mixed media and pastels.
Much of what Rebecca does in the studio is deeply influenced by both modern and ancient art, and she revels at exploring any and all art museums. She is particularly fond of abstract expressionism and expressionism in general for the way the styles communicate the individuality and spirit of the artist.
A lifelong Missouri resident, the artist holds a BFA degree in painting and drawing, an MS in education, and has taught both art and gifted education in area schools. She is also a juried artist member of Best of Missouri Hands and the Gateway Pastel Society.
Cheryl started working in glass about 40 years ago. It was her love for the medium and the way the light danced through it on which her passion was built. Her technical skills were developed using historical methods, but her more recent works utilize methods developed by Tiffany.
Cheryl’s love for the natural world can be seen and felt through her pieces. She utilizes not only glass but agates, stones, shells and numerous other articles that can be wrapped in the Tiffany method.
Her process has evolved from the traditional to the modern. She loves how the interaction between glass and light explode when the right pieces come together. She doesn’t try to make the glass work for her, instead she lets it dictate the piece and design. Her designs are featured in the September issue of the international magazine, Stained Glass News.
