Join Art Walk’s newest locations for new artists and new shows in June. Birds Eye Tattoo & Art Gallery on West McDaniel invites you to experience the works of Featured Artist Clark Medley in amazing cipher/cryptic language, plus visit STD Flea Market/Grey Rocks Event Center on East Trafficway for art by Featured Artist Richard Lewis. Lewis got his start at MSU but went on to create in New Orleans. He paints musicians and architecture incorporating elements of Pop and Impressionist art.

Art Inspired, 230 S. Market, presents Landscapes by Doreen Wilhelmi.
Doreen is a participant of Abilities First-Next Steps. She is a talented artist who has Autism Spectrum Disorder. She prefers to work mainly with soft pastels and occasionally hard pastel chalk. Doreen has been creating pastel art for three years. She enjoys the precision of pastel chalk and being able to use her hands to create her artwork. Each landscape takes about 4 to 6 hours to complete. Pastel chalk art started as a relaxation activity for her but has developed into a hobby that she is excited to share! Developing landscapes has helped Doreen to see things as others see them. She is inspired by varying landscapes throughout the United States such as gardens, waterscapes, and fields. Doreen was inspired to focus on landscapes by her daughter, Elizabeth, who encouraged her to develop her artistic skills in more depth. She recently won second place for her artwork in the MO Mental Health Foundation competition. Her winning piece is on display throughout Missouri in a traveling art exhibit for the next year. Beyond Studio, 400 South Ave., Stes. 230-250, presents Featured Artists Amy and Taylor Jenkins.
Amy states, “I enjoy creating solely based on feeling. I try and set aside any thoughts that usually consume me. Freeing myself of constrictions.”
Taylor says, “I have such a hard time describing my art, because each piece usually has its own meaning or message. Birds Eye Tattoo & Art Gallery, 300 W. McDaniel, is proud to present Featured Artist Clark Medley in June. “I have worked on my craft since the 80s: always developing my voice as an artist,” Medley said. His work in cipher/cryptic language takes an abstract form with modern and contemporary elements, fashioning depth and contrast to create drama between the symbols and the surface on which they rest. “The thing I love most is watching people who are viewing my work. They seem to realize my work is a puzzle and try to figure it out. The moment when they realize I’ve made up my own language seems to pull them in and connect. I love seeing this.” (417) 771 5487. BookMarx, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101, presents Featured Artist Kathryn Zerbe and her show titled Postal Quilts and Tea Stain, which consists of stitched paper collages by “combining historic quilt designs and vintage stamps. The images are thematic, oftentimes resulting in visual puns and irony. I’ve also been working with stained and recycled papers in assemblages combining fibers and Greek calligraphy.”

Becky Lewis Smith: Works of abstract expressionism caught my imagination from high school and before. Paintings of modern artists such as Diebenkorn, De Koonig, and Thiebaud were foundational. Drawings done by Rembrandt, the discoveries of ancient art, and even nature itself served, too, as inspirations for my work. All of these artists, influences, and many more led me to pursue a BFA degree in painting & drawing.
Abstract expressionism is a way for me to convey the energy, rhythm, mood, and movement of the life I see and feel all around me. … Recent themes of my work include Figures, Delta Cotton, Metamorphosis and Just Desserts. I work primarily in oils, pastels, charcoal, and mixed media.
Wesley Horton: I’m a creator of art, primarily pottery. With clay, I feel there is no other medium closer in connection to the earth. In ceramics, mystery is exhibited in every piece, from designing a concept to creating a piece and firing it; multiple variables create unexpected results. Ceramics are a fun challenge for me, and I enjoy the infinite techniques I’m learning throughout my journey. Although my main tool is the pottery wheel, nothing captivates me more than hand building a ceramic sculpture. I believe sculpture pulls the strings of my creativity and increases interest in my work.

Artist Statement: “I love color. I am moved and transfixed by COLOR.
“When I paint I see what my eyes feel. I see colors, and how light dances off one and hides in the shadow of another.
“My paintings begin with a blank canvas or wood panel. Gestural markings appear, and energy infuses the process. Squiggles, slashes, drips, swooshes, mark making, some thin and fine, some heavy, thick and dark, begin to appear. I layer acrylic paint, pastels, water colors, and acrylic ink, layer some more, scrape, then remove, uncovering an abstract language of colors, textures, and shapes. What the paint reveals determines the outcome. …

Get an early start with fun for all ages at the SGF Chalk Arts Festival 10 a.m.-10 p.m. June 1. Hosted by ideaXfactory to benefit Foster Adopt Connect of SWMo, featured artists will begin drawing at 10 a.m. on the MSU Brick City parking lot behind the ideaXfactory. The public is invited to find a spot and join our drawing community. The event is free, all ages are welcome, and we will provide the chalk!
Live music starts at 2 p.m. with Melinda Mullins, Jon Livingston, Molly Daniels, and local musicians on the outdoor patio. Join hands-on fun with Art Zone, Professor Powers Science Symposium and Queen City Rock Camp. Sarah Smith is voice student at Conservatory of the Ozarks in Springfield. Sarah has been studying voice with Heather Leverich at the Conservatory since 2014. Springfield Police Museum at The Calaboose, 409 W. McDaniel, is once again open to the public for First Friday Art Walk! The Calaboose, Springfield’s original jail, was built in 1891 and used until the 1940s. The historic display covers a wide variety of fascinating crimes, lawmen and relics of law enforcement past. Visitors will be chilled by the sight of the last hangman’s rope and the black hood worn by the last condemned criminal to die by hanging in 1935. An art major at MSU, Lewis lived in New Orleans for several years but moved back to Springfield after Katrina. He still sells his work at two galleries in New Orleans.
