Get your ‘stick’ on Route 66

In place of the Birthplace of Route 66 Festival, which was to take place Aug. 13-14 but was canceled earlier this summer due to COVID-19 concerns, the festival committee is partnering with the Route 66 Car Museum, Jordan Valley Community Health Center’s Mobile Vaccination Unit, Springfield Fire Department and IAFF Local 152 to host a COVID-19 vaccination event 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at the museum, 1634 W. College St. Those who receive their first or second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will receive free admission to the museum, a $15 value.

Jordan Valley Community Health Center has administered nearly 100,000 COVID-19 vaccines in more than 70 locations. Anyone who is hesitant or has questions about the vaccine is encouraged to call the Springfield-Greene County Health Department’s Vaccine Hotline at 417-874-1211 or email coronavirus@springfieldmo.gov.

“Thank you to Route 66 Car Museum owner Guy Mace and our partners for making this event possible. This is a wonderful opportunity to both get vaccinated against COVID-19 and celebrate Route 66,” says Cora Scott, director of Public Information & Civic Engagement for the City of Springfield and a festival steering committee member. “We have our sights set on 2022 and are planning to bring the festival back then if conditions allow us to do it safely.”

About the museum

The Route 66 Car Museum is a privately owned car collection that is located along the famed and historic Route 66. Guy Mace started collecting in 1990 when he bought his first Jaguar. The collection has since grown to nearly 70 automobiles.

Ranging from early brass-era cars to vehicles used in cinema such as the Gotham Roadster, this collection is sure to have a vehicle for every visitor’s taste.

The museum houses seven Jaguars, two Rolls Royces, a 1963 Morgan owned by Desert Storm’s General Norman Schwarzkopf, and the famous truck from the movie “The Grapes of Wrath” that starred Henry Fonda.

Several very unique classic cars are on display. Of note is the 1936 Horch, one of about 50 that were sold to the German government in 1937. This Horch won second place in the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Prewar Preservation Class.
Two other classics in the collection are the 1933 Auburn 12, and the 1926 Kissel Brougham, which represent the pinnacle of 1920s and 1930s classics, along with several other unusual cars on display from that era.
