This Big Question deserves a big piece of music full of big ideas and big voices, and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem delivers all of that and more. The Requiem is a towering artistic achievement of tremendous emotional intensity, seething with existential anxiety and terror. From the violent and furious “Dies Irae” (“Day of Wrath”) that screams chaos and apocalypse to the serene beauty of the “Recodare,” Verdi’s Requiem takes on the afterlife in a thrilling, stunning, and ultimately very moving hope for salvation, both for individuals and humanity at large. We bring the combined choirs of our local colleges together for this truly remarkable performance.
