Downtown is abuzz with activity after weird midweek holiday

It was a little strange celebrating Independence Day in the middle of the week. A lot of Springfieldians didn’t get the luxury of a long weekend. Bummed? Don’t be! Head Downtown for lots of fun July 5-8, including two more fireworks shows!

Fireworks at Hammons Field

The Springfield Cardinals are finishing up a six-game homestand. They have several great promotionsplanned.

Thursday, July 5, is a pre-game Happy Hour on the field and $1 bratwurst night. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. The Cardinals will also give away 2,000 replica red batting practice jerseys. The night ends with a Pure American Country Songs fireworks display.

Friday, July 6, is another 7:10 p.m. start and more fireworks. This time it’s American Love Songs as the Cardinals wrap up Freedom Week Fireworks.

The Cardinals play at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, July 7, and Sunday, July 8. Promotions include a Mike and Tate Matheny double-bobblehead giveaway. Mike manages the St. Louis Cardinals. Tate played for the Missouri State Bears. For more information, visit the Springfield Cardinals website.

Art Walk Doubleheader

This weekend is a rare treat for art loves. First Friday Art Walk and Second Saturday Art Walk are on back-to-back nights!

First Friday is July 6, from 6-10 p.m. More than 20 locations across downtown are participating. Art Walkers can expect to see:

  • paintings
  • photography
  • ceramics
  • cryptography
  • live music
  • hands-on art activities
  • and much more.

Second Saturday is July 7 from noon-5 p.m. Come back Downtown for more artist receptions, live music and more fun.

The First Friday Art Walk team has put together a full list of galleries and events.

Party at Park Central Square

First Friday also means free entertainment at Park Central Square. July’s party includes live music from 6-10 p.m. Performers include:

  • Devlin Pierce and the Song
  • Symphony Ree
  • The Dalliant

Food vendors will be on hand. There will also be plenty of activities to entertain the kids. CompassRose.Online throws this party and has a full list of vendors and activities.

If live music, comedy or theater are more your speed, there’s plenty to see this weekend downtown. You can even catch a free movie at Founders Park!

Missouri State University’s Tent Theatre presents the magical show “Peter and the Starcatcher.” In the mood for something sinister? The Grove, at Bits of Britain Cafe, will host an encore performance of the dark farce “The 4th Sin.”

Want some laughs? The Blue Room Comedy Club presents stand-up comedian Bobby Jaycox. Do you love live music? Singer Jake Wesley Rogers performs at The Outland Ballroom. The Ozark native is supporting his debut EP, “Evergreen.”
