The Winter Blues are No Match for Sculpture Walk

November 28, 2017

By Shannon Hruska, Sculpture Walk Springfield

It’s true what they say—there’s no place like downtown for the holidays! Last weekend’s Park Central Square tree lighting kicked off a bevy of holiday fun downtown for the whole family. The Christmas tree is lit, and Springfield is invited downtown to enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, ice skating, Christmas concerts and so much more.

This time of year, it’s easy to spend your weekends cozy at home in front of the fire. Save your couch time for 2018, because there’s simply too much going on downtown to sit at home. The Gillioz Theatre, Springfield Little Theatre, Springfield Contemporary Theatre, and Hammons Hall are all showing Christmas plays, musicals, ballets and concerts, and we’ve got the perfect pre-show activity for you—Sculpture Walk!

With 22 sculptures located throughout downtown, there is plenty of public art to see as you stroll to your holiday destination. Find free parking in the lot off of Boonville and Olive Street (north of the Square), where you can’t miss our most exuberant sculptures—Eggcited and Maestro. We challenge you to show as much glee as Eggcited in a family photo. These sweet little Humpty Dumpties are the cutest—and smallest—in our collection this year.

With four sculptures on each corner of Park Central Square, you’ll find a sculpture no matter what route you take to your show. If you’re on your way to the Gillioz, you can’t miss Propensity located on Park Central East. Propensity is our proclaimed selfie sculpture this year. Grab some silly pics with your family before ducking into the theatre. If you’re heading to the Springfield Little Theatre, find The Piano Man outside of The Coffee Ethic on South Street. Peer through the shapes of the sculpture to gaze at the lights of the Christmas tree on the Square.

Want to see the sculptures while staying cozy and warm? Hit up Park Central Square on Saturdays for horse-drawn carriage rides that will take you past a variety of public art—sculptures, murals, and more! Don’t forget to share your photos from your night out on the town using #SculptureWalkSGF and #DowntownSGF.
