5 Ways to Beat the Heat in Downtown Springfield

July 17, 2017

1. Treat yourself to gelato

Since opening last spring, Maes Gelateria has been one of our favorite sources for tasty desserts. The little cups of gelato are perfect when you want to cool off without feeling stuffed. We recommend the stracciatella flavor.

2. Make a splash

Bring the kids to splash around in the Jordan Valley Park fountains. It’s the perfect way to cool off—and work on your tan. The fountains run through mid-October, weather permitting. Plus, check out Mediacom Ice Park for chilly fun (rain or shine).

3. Put the lime in the coconut

The Golden Girl Rum Club has answered our thirsty prayers and acquired two new slushee machines. Stay cool with a chilly beverage on the hot downtown spot’s patio.

4. Catch a show

Sometimes heading indoors is the only way to escape the heat. Luckily, downtown is full of theaters so you can cool off while enjoying a show. Options include Springfield Little Theatre, Springfield Improv, Springfield Contemporary Theatre, Blue Room Comedy Club, Moxie Cinema and Regal Cinemas at College Station.

5. Crack open a cold one

Downtown is home to some of the area’s best breweries if you’re in the mood for a cold one on a hot day. Brave the heat in Mother’s Backyard, or chow down on barbecue with a brew at Lost Signal.
