While our B Movie series is committed to bringing Mother’s lovers the best in cinematic schlock, December’s flick will be a slightly tonier affair.
‘Beat the Devil’ boasts an impressive pedigree for a film in the public domain: directed by John Huston, with a screenplay by Huston and Truman Capote, starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, and Peter Lorre.
Huston conceived the movie as a comedic parody of his 1941 noir classic ‘The Maltese Falcon.’
A commercial flop, the film achieved cult status and was called by later critics the first camp film.
So, a forgotten spoof on the noir genre, with A-list production and cast credits, largely forgotten, but also an important work in the formation of the ironic and subversive camp aesthetic. Sounds like a good time to us.
See you there film freaks.
